A CAPtivating Guide to All Things Hats & Hat Fitting
Whether your hat brim is curved or flat, the decoration is embroidery or an awesome patch, whether you've got a five-panel cycling hat or a trucker hat with rope, a snapback, a flex fit, or you've finally figured out that pesky clamp on your adjustable hat—you need to love your lid! Hats are an extension of your own head, as well as an expression of your personality. They can be worn to keep the sun out of your eyes on a bright summer day or to tie your outfit together. But most of all, hats are worn to show one's support for a favorite sports team, club, music group, organization, cause, or even a brand.
Merch Mythbuster: Why doesn't every hat fit the same?
There are many factors that play a role in the fit of a hat. Here are a few for you to consider when finding the best fit for you. Crown Height This is the vertical distance from the top of the crown to the visor. A high crown style (depth ≥ 4") is great for someone with a longer distance from their ears to the top of their head, while a low crown (depth ≤ 3") fits women and those with rounded heads better.
Visor Style
While you can add more curve or slightly flatten any visor, the visor style determines how the visor is sewn to the main panels, so a flat bill, even when forced into a curved visor, will not fit or feel the same as a curved visor, whose seam is actually curved.
Closure Style
Fitted hats are great when you know your hat size, guaranteeing a more consistent fit. Adjustable hats, coming with a variety of closures such as snapbacks, velcro, sliders, or buckles, give each wearer the flexibility to make the hat as tight or as loose as they want.
Material Choices
Different fabrics have varying levels of flexibility, breathability, and durability, so a mesh back hat will feel and fit differently than a full-fabric hat made of wool hat, cotton twill, or even nylon.
